I think it’s important for youth to be involved in decisions in the community because the opinions of youth are often overlooked. I’m also excited to be able to get an inside look into how the government works on this community level, and I can see if it would be something I would like to pursue further in my future.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

Youth for one, are the future. They’ll be the future of the town and the country and I believe it’s important that their opinion is heard, and not disclosed from the discussions and decisions that may affect them, both now and in the future. Secondly, the youth are still a part of the town now, in the present, and just because they may not be adults doesn’t mean their opinion matters any less.

Since I’ve moved to Northfield, I’ve found a community that is welcoming and progressive. There are tons of great opportunities for me here, in terms of academics, athletics, and programs I can use to pursue my interests

Most of the decisions within the community affect youth in one way or another. I think it is crucial for youth to be involved because youth have a very different perspective in comparison to adults.

Events like Heritage Days, the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, and the Rice County Fair are events that bring our entire community together. The collaboration that happens in Faribault has continuously strengthened my pride in this town.

What is one change you would like to see in Faribault to make it an even better place to grow up?

One change I would like to see in Faribault is growth in our town pride. Although we have many great and inspiring people and events, I feel as though the pride is lacking. I think if we increase inclusivity in Faribault our town pride would grow.

Ananda Myint

Serves on: District Youth Council

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I am happy to be getting involved in my community and to be given an outlet to share my voice on the issues in Northfield that I’m passionate about and I see as important. I think it will be a great way to meet new people, share ideas and opinions, and create a positive impact. I’m also looking forward to getting to work with adults as well as other youth.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

So many of the decisions that are made by the adults in the community, such as the school board, directly affect the youth of Northfield. It’s crucial that the youth have a way to share their input on these decisions because it gives a new perspective and is how Northfield can make changes that are in the best interest of the youth themselves. It’s important to nourish and support the youth as they are the future of the community, and as they grow, they will continue to have bigger and bigger roles.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

I love that the Northfield community makes an effort to support the arts for not only youth, but the community as a whole. I think it’s great that as I grow up here, I am encouraged to see and do music and art, and many of my peers are involved in theater or other forms of the arts. I also like the downtown environment Northfield has created. It’s a generally safe and fun place to grow up, and I appreciate that the Northfield community utilizes the downtown area to hold gatherings and celebrations such as Defeat of Jesse James Days and Winter Walk.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

I think I would encourage downtown businesses to limit waste. Especially with selling food, limiting plastic cups, boxes, utensils. Either that, or using alternative compostable materials, and making disposing of compostable materials easier by setting out bins that are collected. Also maybe creating a safer way to cross Highway 3, possibly with a tunnel under the road, to connect kids from the east and west sides of town. The west side has some good parks and the east side has downtown, the library, etc., that both sides should be able to access.

What is your favorite…

  • Movie(s)? I can’t choose one favorite but I like Dead Poets Society, Spirited Away, and Interstellar, to name a few.
  • Food(s)? I like sushi and garlic bread.
  • TV show(s)? I enjoyed The 100 and The Umbrella Academy, and as a kid I liked Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Serves on: District Youth Council

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

As a third year member and now co-chair, I’m excited to keep the program moving forward and making positive change. I’m excited to communicate even more effectively this year with the student body and make sure their concerns are being addressed!

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?

The best part about serving on District Youth Council in the past has been the friendships and relationships I’ve built with my peers and also adults in the community that I otherwise wouldn’t have known. It’s important to know many different people in the community if you’re going to be representing them!

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

We live here! We’re constantly affected by decisions made on boards with adults on them, so why shouldn’t we have a voice? Plus, as we are growing and learning, we may be able to attack issues with a different perspective or lens than the adults that may prove useful.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

The schools! I’ve always felt so welcome and safe in every classroom I’ve learned in for the past 12 or 13 years of my life.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

I am super interested in public health, and I enjoy working with people from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

I enjoyed the conversations between me and my fellow board members. No member felt better than the next, so it created an environment that fostered honest conversation.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

I think that the youth are community makers just as much as any adult, and I think that sometimes the “youth opinion” is representative of one group. However, our views vary widely and deserve to be represented as well.

Grace Ryden

Serves on: District Youth Council

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

Both my brothers and many of my friends have served on boards and they have all had good experiences! I look forward to also having those experiences, and through my board I also hope to continue bringing attention to the voices of the youth in NFLD.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

Youth are often affected by the decisions made by adults in town, so they should get the chance to share their opinions on issues that will be affecting them. I also think that youth have many varying perspectives that may help others in the community understand what it means to be a kid in Northfield and what is best for the youth population here.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

I’ve appreciated the arts community that is fostered here in Northfield. There are so many opportunities for both youth and adults to participate in all types of art.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

Historically Minnesota has been one of the worst states in the United States in terms of racial disparities and issues, and Northfield is no an exception to this. While Northfield has so many progressive undertones to our community dynamic, I feel that there is a disconnect between many white people and people of color. In terms of housing, friend groups, and economic status, Northfield is segregated by race. I find that this is particularly true with the Latinx population here. In any way that we can I think Northfield should address this disconnect.

What are your hobbies?

I play guitar and cello and I sing, I’m in theater, and I’m in mock trial. I also like to write and paint.

What is your post high school ambition?

Ann Sanders

Serves on: Housing and Redevelopment Authority

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I’m excited about serving on the Housing and Redevelopment Authority because I think it’s so important to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard when it comes to the places that we live and inhabit. Where we live is a definitely a defining thing in who we are as people, and it’s crucial that we are respectful and cognizant about the decisions we make concerning our homes, and I’m just so grateful to be a part of that process.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

I think it’s important for youth to be involved in decisions that are made in our community because we will someday have to make those decisions as adults, and it’s important to keep in mind the population that we are making decisions for, and a large portion of the population is youth. Who better to represent youth interests than youth?

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

I think that the best part of growing up in and living in Northfield is downtown. I think it’s an amazing hub of art and culture, and it’s a great place for people to really connect with each other on a more personal level.

The youth are part of the community, and deserve to be able to influence the world that they live in.

Being in a vibrant, pleasant, small town.

Marta Sorenson

Serves on: Northfield Arts Guild Board of Directors

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I love art and always have! Being on this board gives me a chance to learn about getting communities involved in art and how to support arts. Northfield especially is such a unique and artistic town; it’s interesting to see how much work goes into supporting this community’s artists and opportunities for young artists.

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?

The best part of serving on the Art Guild’s Board of Directors is seeing how what the Board works on shows up in the community. I get to hear about the planning and work that goes into events, and I get to attend those events as an artistic student. The Guild does so much for getting young work out there, and it’s really cool to be on both sides of it.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

I think it’s important because the youth are a part of the community. High schoolers especially I believe start to develop who they are and who they want to be based on what’s available to them. If they are actively part of the community, they can reach out further and create the opportunities they want and make the changes to their communities that will affect them and their growth in a positive way.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

The best part of Northfield is the arts culture. Northfield High School has such an amazing art department that builds off of the community’s appreciation towards art. From Arts a la Carte and the gallery show put up by The Guild for honors students, the all-school art show also at The Guild, and all the classes offered at The Guild and the colleges in town, there is so much support for the arts in Northfield. It’s something I’ve grown to be really grateful of.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

I’ve always wanted Northfield to have a 24-hour hang out place, like a diner. Some place that kids can hang out and be at that embodies Northfield accepting and creative culture but is always open. Like a comfy diner that serves milkshakes.

What is your favorite…

  • Movie(s)? I love Jojo Rabbit and Loving Vincent, two very different movies but definitely my top two.
  • Food(s)? Mangos and Honeycrisp apples

Shelby Svien

Serves on: Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Steering Committee

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I’m excited about serving on this board because I care a lot about the welfare of the veterans and military families in our community, and I believe I will be able to help them and make a difference by being a part of this board.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

I think it’s important because youth are a part of this community, and we have a different perspective then many adults. We have ideas to contribute, and when things affect us too, we’d like to be a part of the conversation. We have much to offer our community and don’t want to wait until we’re adults to bring it to the table.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

I just recently moved here, but I believe the best part about living in Northfield is being able to have the mentality of a small and close town with all that that has to offer, while still having access to the amenities of the cities.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

I would like to see more community spaces for people to gather, and I would like more public events at such spaces to help bring the people here together.

  • Who is your role model? I look up to Sandra Perkovic a lot for throwing, but more so my dad is my role model in track and life.

Julia Tassava

Serves on: League of Women Voters Board of Directors

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I’m really into politics, government, and feminism, and I thought a board like this would be right up my alley as it relates to all of those. I think it’s super important to get women involved in political issues and voting, but I also think many of us face obstacles that make it hard to get involved in these types of things, so I’m excited to work on empowering women to vote and learn more about political issues! It’ll be great for me to learn more about these things, too.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

We are the next generation of people who will be leading our own communities, so it’s important for us, as teens, to develop a voice in our own communities we can carry into adulthood. I think the youth perspective on issues is extremely valuable, because there are so many gifted, intelligent, interesting kids with useful ideas in our community, and everywhere. It’s important to have a community where youth can give input to make it a better place for all.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

The community is really strong academically, intellectually, athletically, and artistically. I think there are so many cool programs and groups for kids to take part in here, and I’m really grateful for that. I’ve had so many opportunities to learn more about things I’m interested in and develop my passions from different programs, groups, and teams Northfield has to offer, such as the Youth on Boards program.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

I think our community should be more inclusive and be better at fostering conversation between different groups of people, such as our Hispanic population and LGBTQ+ population here. We are already fairly good with this, but there is definitely room for improvement.

What is your favorite…

  • Movie(s)? Little Women (the 2019 version) or Lady Bird

Meadow Vrtis

Serves on: Northfield Historical Society Board of Directors

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I have been involved in the Northfield Historical Society for many years. I was a part of their various programs for youth: Jr. Curator, Jr. Posse, and SCOPE. In addition, I volunteer as a tour guide through the adult Posse program and hold a job as the summer assistant. My experiences at the Northfield Historical Society have been very rewarding and have shown me the immense importance of this organization. I am excited to continue my involvement through the Board, and get to see another side of the Historical Society.

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?

As I explained above, I LOVE the time I spend at the Historical Society. Last year on the board, I was able to explore a new part of the Historical Society by seeing the management side of the organization. This has been a very unique opportunity because not only have I been able to further my involvement in the organization, I have also been a part of conversations and decisions that I know will impact my community, and that has been very rewarding. I am excited to serve another year!

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?

Ever since we were little we have heard the question: “One day you will inherit the world, what do you plan to do with it?” While the phrase is cliché, it makes a good point. One day, my generation will “inherit” the world, and it is important that we have the skills and experience to know what to do. I think it is important for youth to get involved in the community both to learn and grow as individuals, and to help make an impact on the world they will “inherit.” Additionally, every generation has new ideas and perspectives, so I think it is important for communities to have a multigenerational influence.

What is the best part about growing up or living in Northfield?

I have lived in Northfield since I was three years old, and it has been a great place to grow up. For me, Northfield is a very safe community, and has been a good environment to grow up in. Also, I feel that there are many opportunities for youth in Northfield — through the schools, colleges, and proximity to the cities. Another thing I love about Northfield is all of its parks and little pockets of nature. Finally, as a bit of a history nerd, I love the rich history that Northfield has to offer (and yes, this extends beyond the James-Younger gang raid).

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

One thing that I think would make Northfield an even better place to grow up would be an increase in bike paths and bike lanes on roads. (I know this process has already started, which is great, but I think a greater increase is possible!) Also, I know many youth wish there were more accessible “hang outs” in Northfield. For example, the new movie theater is great, but its distance from town makes it rather inaccessible for many.

  • Food(s)? Watermelon!!
  • TV show(s)? Friends, Friends, and more Friends!!

  • Who is your role model? My parents, my aunt, and one of my favorite teachers.

What are your hobbies?

Swimming, speech team, violin, volunteering, hiking, tour guiding.

What is your post high school ambition?

I plan to go to college and graduate school. I am not sure what profession I see myself in, but I think perhaps being an educator would suit me well. I would also like to be able to write and spend time outdoors in whatever career I go into.
