Kate-BornhauserKate Bornhauser

Serves on: Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I’m excited about serving on this Board because I love to read and go to the library myself, and I want to help get other “younger” people in the library as well.

Why do you think it is important for young people to be involved in community decision-making?

I think it’s important, because they provide a different voice to the community. The younger generation amounts for a big proportion of the community, so it would make sense for them/us to be involved in decision making within the town. It’s also important for kids to gain a sense of responsibility, and start getting involved within the community right away, so they’ll continue to do so.

What is the best part about growing up in Northfield?

The small town atmosphere. Everyone just genuinely cares about one another. For example, if I were to walk down the sidewalk, I know that multiple people would wave and say hi, even if we’d never met. I also like how diverse Northfield is. Sports, the arts, and academics all have importance and it’s to find your niche.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

One change I would like to see in Northfield is no drug use and drinking. It make people less connected with one another, and also causes a lot of damage to their bodies. Furthermore, if less people did it, they would be doing other fun things that are legal and safe, and would involve others.

I enjoyed the MYC meetings and hearing about the things happening in Northfield and what we could do about them.

Why do you think it is important for young people to be involved in community decision-making?

Youth have a lot of energy and care about change, also we are the ones that will live here so we should have input on how it will be and we live now so we have to promote stuff for ourselves.

What is the best part about growing up in Northfield?

Nature! Lots of opportunities for youth and education and freedom to pursue all of my interests.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

It seems like there is a divide between a place like the Key and the very official school run clubs and programs. I think it would be nice to have more places or things where teens can follow their interests without needing to be elite.

Hannah-Johnson-v2Hannah Johnson

Serves on: Mayor’s Youth Council

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?

I am excited about serving on MYC this year, because I have a great year of experience under my belt and with the new organization of MYC as well, I think that I can participate more in conversations because I will understand more about discussions and the item being discussed.

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?

The best part about serving on a Board like MYC was that we were able to communicate ideas from our peers into the meetings. This wasn’t a great system for this year as I don’t knowhow much we accomplished but I believe that this will get better this year with smaller subcommittees.

Why do you think it is important for young people to be involved in community decision-making?

I think it is important for young people to be involved in this decision making, because we as the younger generation sometimes get passed by when it comes to getting input from us. It can be perceived that we are not old or smart enough to make mature decisions. I think that, though we are not all quite to that capacity, we still have a good and different insight into city affairs that should be heard.

What is the best part about growing up in Northfield?

I think that the best parts about growing up in Northfield are the endless opportunities for activities that we are given as young people. For example, the variety of sports that are organized like intramural basketball or the volleyball tournaments in school.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?

One change about Northfield that I would make is the lack of safe organized things to do, say on the weekend. I think if we added something like a roller rink or activities along those lines that teens and young people alike could have even more to do; not necessary, but I think it could potentially make it even better.
