I’ve always felt that the Northfield community is tight-knit to the point that it’s pretty difficult to break into if you’re shy or hesitant in anyway. If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?
N/A

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?
A large amount of the community is youth so they should have a say in what is happening in their community.

What is the best part about growing up in Northfield?
The small town vibe. As corny as it may sound. I love how the community works together and celebrates our accomplishments. I moved from Prior Lake in 6th grade from a school that was over grown and a community that was consistently changing and moving so fast that no one could just talk or be happy or in the moment. I just existed in Prior Lake, but here is feels like I matter because everyone can be heard.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?
I want to see that students and the school system are strongly supported. The school has had some issues, especially with the highschool. I know that there was an attempt to solve the issues last year, but that didn’t go through and now the school is in the exact same place, just more people are upset. I think the school needs change, but too much was asked of the community. Especially one filled with people who don’t have kids going through the school systems and don’t want their taxes raised to support a change that in their minds doesn’t affect them. I think that our community is so rich with character and spirt that it can afford and see the need for change in some areas that have been neglected for so long.

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?
I think the best part was the steep learning curve! I just saw the tip of the iceberg this year but I already have a much greater understanding of how things happen in Northfield.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?
Since youth live with the results of decisions that are made just as much as adults do, I think it’s important that our perspective is present for those discussions and taken seriously. It’s also just a really great learning experience for youth to be involved, since we will someday be the ones making all the decisions.

Robby Swenson

Serves on: Arts & Culture Commission

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?
My love of the arts has thrived throughout my life. From having singing parties with my stuffed animals before I was five to recently singing in the national honors choir, my life has revolved around music and the arts for a long time. I am excited to get to share ideas of how we can increase more people’s love for the arts and our culture, as these things have certainly shaped my life!

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?
N/A

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?
I think it is important for youth to be involved in community decisions because we make up a very large part of the community. If there were no opportunities for youth to get involved, it would be similar to not letting some adults vote! I also think it is important because many young people have the most creative brains I know, that are bursting with creativity each and every day, and if we can let their voices be heared, some truly amazing things could happen.

What is the best part about growing up in Northfield?
My personal favorite part about growing up in Northfield is the amount of opportunities it gives to students. For example, athletic people have a large variety of sports to choose from, academically advanced students have rigorous AP courses, musically talented kids have a community where music is strongly supported, and the list goes on and on. Everybody has a path for success.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?
Although Northfield is already very environmentally healthy, with solar panels on many houses and clean and beautiful nature parks/ trails, I would like to see more of the already existent nature helping activities be broadcasted better. As an example, in seventh grade life science, our teacher told us about an event happening to help build a compost bin for people to use instead of the oh-so-easy trash can. I happily went to help with this project, and I had fun with it! After this project, I realized that I never would’ve discovered this opportunity if it weren’t for this class, and there were likely many other cool activities like this that I had never heared of. For this reason, I think if the Northfield community were able to “advertise” more activities such as these, many more people could help to make the world a better place.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?
According to the Census Bureau, youth make up about 18% of the population in Northfield, so decisions made by the city with or without 18% of the population goes against building a strong, fair, and welcoming community.

Alice Zhang

Serves on: District Youth Council

Why are you excited about serving on this Board or Commission?
I am excited about serving in the District Youth Council because I will allow me to gain knowledge on the different parts of this district, hear from different groups of students, and develop leadership skills

If you served this past year, what was the best part about serving on a Board or Commission?
In my opinion, the best part about serving on the District Youth Council was learning about events going on in the district. As a result of my experiences in DYC, I am now able to explain different topics such as the bond referendum, the set up of the Social Studies curriculum, and the nutrition programs throughout the District.

Why do you think it is important for youth to be involved in community decision-making?
I believe it is important for youth to be involved in decisions made in our community because they make up a large part of it and are able to offer unique perspectives. For example, earlier this year my subcommittee in the District Youth Council had a conversation with the Social Studies teachers to discuss the current curriculum. During this meeting, each of my group members came up with creative suggestions and feedback such as; the request of having more class discussions and to offer advanced classes or AP classes. In addition, being involved in the decisions made in our community will also allow youth to play active roles in the places that they care most about. I often hear questions by my peers about certain decisions made in the community such as; the decision to fund a new building. From this information, I believe that becoming more involved in these councils will help students communicate their thoughts about certain topics they care about.

What is the best part about growing up in Northfield?
In my opinion, the best part about growing up in Northfield is its accepting climate. As an Asian American student coming from a different background, I feel as if members Northfield community often place emphasis on appreciating everyone’s unique qualities while also remembering the importance of being aware of everyone’s similarities regardless of a person’s background, ethnicity, or religion.

What is one change you would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up?
One change I would like to see in Northfield to make it an even better place to grow up in is an increase in support for the Community Action Center (CAC) and related organizations. As someone involved in multiple extracurriculars, I believe that it is important for all youth to be given the opportunity to participate in what they are passionate in; which is what the CAC supports. Thus, if local support increased for organizations such as the CAC more youth would be given these opportunities to develop their interests and give back to the community later on.
