Youth Engagement

Jenny Dietiker

“My time on Youth on Boards has been incredible, giving me true insight into the goings-on of local politics. I’ve spent time with fantastic people doing meaningful work for the future of the city, and the program has given me the communication skills to excel in my future career. Youth on Boards has done so much, not only for the city of Northfield, but for me personally as well.”

Our community is stronger when young people have seats at our decision-making tables. Through two innovative programs – YouthBank and Youth on Boards – local youth have their voices heard and are actively engaged in civic life.

YOUTH ON BOARDS

Northfield offers a unique opportunity for youth to get involved in local government, make change, and have a voice. Opportunities include:

  • The Mayor’s Youth Council, which works with the Mayor and the City Council of Northfield to identify issues important to Northfield young people and help design and implement solutions.
  • The District Youth Council, which gathers and provides youth input to the Northfield Public Schools and Northfield School Board
  • City of Northfield Boards and Commissions
  • Nonprofit Boards

YOUTHBANK

Northfield YouthBank is a youth-run grant-making initiative that provides more than $25,000 in funds annually to projects that are led by local youth.

Each year, Northfield YouthBank members open up grant applications to projects that focus on a particular theme or area of interest (i.e. “level the playing field,” third spaces, etc.). Youth ages 14-19 living in the Northfield School District can apply for a grant of up to $10,000. To learn more and to see if YouthBank is currently accepting applications, click here.
